Research infrastructures in the European Union

At EU level the topic of research infrastructures has received increasing recognition over the past 10 years. On the European Commission's Website you will get a comprehensive overview of activities and funding opportunities. In the recent years the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) has developed a long-term plan for the establishment of European research infrastructures. Upon request to and by decision of the European Commission, these are permanently institutionalised in form of theEuropean Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERIC).

The growing complexity of research infrastructures requires a high degree of management skills. As part of the 7th research framework program the EU has extracted a project, which summarises these requirements in a RI Management Handbook. Under Horizon 2020 as the current EU research funding instrument these activities will continue in the Project RItrain. This program focuses on those people, who are already now involved in the management of research infrastructures.
